High-speed bearings: role, design and key applications. What designs are available from Rollix?

High-speed slewing bearings are designed to operate at high rotational speeds whilst ensuring stability, precision and minimal heat build-up. They differ from conventional bearings in that their design is optimised to reduce friction and maintain performance even as speed increases.

  • Strict tolerances to minimise vibration and deformation.

The aim: to ensure fast, stable and sustainable rotation, even under demanding conditions.

These requirements call for a detailed understanding of materials, internal clearances, the geometry of raceways and lubrication systems.

How Rollix defines a ‘high-speed’ slewing bearing

Once this threshold is reached, Rollix draws on its specialist expertise, based on a number of technical approaches:

  • Specific ring design (balls or rollers, single, double or triple row)
  • Optimisation of the raceway to minimise overheating and enable continuous rotation
  • Specific lubrication (grease or oil)
  • Specific cages to minimise overheating

These choices ensure consistent performance, even in demanding industrial environments.

What are the possible technologies and their applications?

1) Rollix RT range:

(3-row roller technology) Precision ring gear – machine tool applications: performance up to 120,000 N·dm

  • rotary table
  • turntable

This range is particularly well suited to systems where rigidity and precision are essential.

2) Double Row Speed range

(2-row ball technology) Performance up to 400 000 N.dm.

Typical applications:

  • Tree-trunk debarker (forestry industry)
  • Marine winch
  • Industrial scanner
  • Systems requiring rapid and continuous rotation

3) HD-R (Heavy Duty) range

Designed for high radial loads, with a capacity of up to 300 000 N.Dm.

Applications :

  • Marine winches
  • Equipment subjected to high loads and intensive cycles

4) ‘Optimised’ standard ball bearing range

Ball rings with a cage and a specialised design, suitable for any application requiring controlled acceleration.

This range offers a versatile solution for systems where speed increases occasionally or moderately.

Summary: how to choose the right technology?

The choice of a high-speed bearing depends first and foremost on the target speed, expressed in NxDm, which directly determines the internal design and the materials to be used. Added to this are the loads applied — whether axial, radial or combined — as well as the level of precision required for the application: machine tools, marine winches, industrial scanners or forestry systems.

The operating environment also plays a key role, particularly where it imposes constraints relating to temperature, humidity or intensive cycling. Finally, the nature of the rotation – whether continuous or intermittent – dictates the choice of more or less specialised solutions.

Thanks to these criteria, Rollix can offer the most suitable technology, whether it be an optimised standard ring or a dedicated high-speed solution capable of meeting the most demanding requirements.
